Love on the Line

The deep male voice on the other end of the phone cracked with emotion as he asked , “How do you love?  How do you do that when a person has hurt you so deeply?”

He went on to tell a story of pain; the soul of a grown man, blood-red with suffering; abandoned by family and friends in the wake of discovering his own self and beliefs…which went against the grain.

The people he loved most cut him off from their lives because he didn’t love God in the manner they approved.

Human kind is an interesting mix of remarkable creatures.  Despite our diversity, we are all like serpents, knowing just how to get under the skin and inject poison into the lives of others.

We’re so good at being unloving in the name of right and wrong.

In the name of Jesus, for Christ’s sake!

The only antidote for this poisonous pain is Love.

Love is the healer, the universal solvent that destroys the foundation underlying hatred, dissolves the acid of intolerance, relieves debilitating stress, and frees the captive soul.

The question he asked, “How do you love?” took my breath away.  It’s the one question most people want to ask, but never do.

It’s the question I want to help answer. But it’s sort of hard to describe the trove of information in The Technology of Love on a conference call.  I could only touch the surface.

If I could reach out today to that pain drenched soul on the other end of the phone, I’d tell him:

“There are a million people, right now, who really need your love.  For today, try to forget about the handful of idiots who treated you like fresh cow manure in the middle of the road on a hot day.  “Father forgive them, they don’t know what they’re doing,” still holds true.

There are a million people just waiting to accept your kindness, your care, your time, and your compassion.  People who need you.

Go find one or two of them.  Love them.

Like this:

Be Attentive – use all your senses to connect with the needs of another person

Listen – hear deeply, not just with your ears

Thank – show gratitude for even the simplest things

Praise – give favorable input, actively acknowledge something good

Encourage – be present in mind and body to affirm someone’s intention

Comfort – directly provide for the contentment and security of another (through touch, sight, hearing, etc.)

Assist – take action to be of direct help, lend a helping hand

Share – give something you have to another person who needs it without fear of losing what you have…this could be lending a book, sharing your experience or knowledge, etc.

Contribute – give to someone in need without expecting anything in return

Protect – take action to ward off threats to others, which may be as minimal as keeping a conversation confidential, not engaging in gossip.  It could be as big as laying down your life.

These are the  Action Elements; the 10 Vectors of Love.*  Coupled with the Intent to Please, they work miracles.

They have a range of Intensities that encompass the entire spectrum of Love.

They can be as subdued or as brilliant and colorful as you chose; they can be molded to fit any situation, anytime, anywhere.

Love like this, and you will find healing for your own wounded soul.  Someday you will be able to forgive and Love (at some, even minimal intensity) those who mercilessly and spitefully abused you, because you will be healed through Loving others; you’ll actually touch the hem of the Master’s garment.”

That’s what I’d say.  If I could reach him…
